Flash memory is less likely to fail because it doesn't have any moving parts, while the hard drives have lots of little discs that spin around really fast and have a lot more potential to screw up and brick your ipod. It's kind of pointless unless you work out while listening to music, if your player isn't bouncing around a lot you don't really need flash memory.
